California Redwood Root Company is proud to bring redwood roots, driftwood and burl presented in a very natural clean form that retains the shape of trhe roots and brings out the rich hue of redwood.
I started with one very large root that didn't fit in the garden well so I decided to start a garden art business relying on my dormant skills when I made burl tables and clocks in the 70's.Having an inventory of only one piece of monumental size I began to look for roots and driftwood in smaller sizes to round out my inventory.
One weekend in Monterey I was on Cannery Row to check out some sculptures by Daryl Stokes. His company was the competition of the burl company I worked for in the 70's.Stohans had good wood and workmanship that I admired. In the ensuing decades Daryl had moved to an abstract sculpture design that I wanted to see. I wanted talk about finishes and sanding techniques also.As luck would have it Daryl was behind the counter.
We talked and he offered to sell some pieces from his collection since he was retiring.I went by to look at his wood. After 35years of buying and collecting wood he had amassed an impressive collection of roots, burl and redwood driftwood.Intending to buy a few pieces I ended up buying the entire inventory.I am very grateful to Daryl for his help and inspiration.
My other inspirations in wood are JB Blunk whose I first saw at the California museum in Oakland while in grade school and George Buck who I work for in the 70's who taught me how to work with burl in Arcata.I only worked in burl for about 3 yrs before my back gave out. After doing my day job for the ensuing decades I've moved back to wood.
